Hāmoa Beach is a beach and surf site near Hāna on the eastern coast of Maui long associated with surfing, canoe landings, and Hawaiian tradition. According to some interpretations, the name Hāmoa may derive from an older name connected to Samoa, though the beach itself was historically associated with the land division of Mokae. Over time, Hāmoa became the more widely used name for the beach, particularly as the Hāna coastline became more connected to tourism and outside visitors.
The beach was valued in part because its curved shoreline and protected cove provided a safer area for launching and landing canoes along the rugged stretch of East Maui coastline. Hāmoa also became closely associated with Hawaiian surfing traditions. The surf here, known as the “waves of Pulehe,” was once associated with aliʻi and chiefly recreation. One moʻolelo describes how the daughter of a chief challenged restrictions surrounding the surf break, helping open the waves to a broader community beyond the chiefly class.
The broader area surrounding Hāmoa also carries cultural and archaeological significance. Burial sites and traditional Hawaiian features have long been associated with the coastline between Makaʻalae and Hāmoa, reflecting centuries of Hawaiian settlement and use along this isolated section of Maui. The small puʻu above the beach and nearby coastal areas were historically regarded as culturally important landscapes.
In modern times, Hāmoa Beach became internationally known through travel writing and tourism promotion, including praise from Ernest Hemingway, who reportedly described it as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Despite its popularity, Hāmoa still retains much of the isolated atmosphere that has long defined East Maui. Surrounded by steep vegetation, beautiful shoreline, and the winding road to Hāna, the beach continues to reflect the layered ways Hawaiian places carry older meanings beneath modern visibility.
